Introducing Press Start: A Story Series Kids Unlock One Book at a Time

Something new just landed in the library, and it comes with a twist we have not tried before: a story series that unlocks one book at a time, only as your child reads. It is called Press Start, and it might be the most fun your reluctant reader has ever had turning pages.

Welcome to Pixelport

Grandpa's old arcade cabinet does not just play games. It opens doorways. Step through the screen with Shane and his little sister Allie into Pixelport, a hub of glowing doorways where every game world is real: block-building villages, haunted racetracks, and worlds no one has unlocked yet. Every choice in every story is your child's to make.

A series that unlocks as you read

Here is what makes Press Start different from anything else on the shelf. The books unlock in order. Finishing the first doorway opens the second. Clear the second and the third lights up. Your child is not handed the whole series at once. They earn their way deeper into Pixelport, one adventure at a time.

That single design choice changes everything for a child who usually resists reading. There is always a next doorway just out of reach, and the only key is finishing the story in front of them. Reading stops being the assignment and becomes the thing standing between them and the next world.

Eight doorways, eight adventures

The series runs eight books deep, each one a self-contained adventure into a different game world:

  • Press Start 1: The First Doorway. The day Grandpa's cabinet flickers to life.
  • Press Start 2: The Ghost Racer. A haunted racetrack and a rival who should not exist.
  • Press Start 3: The Clockwork Castle. A locked doorway full of gears and secrets.
  • Press Start 4: The Great Migration. A journey across a living, moving world.
  • Press Start 5: The Sunken Arcade. An underwater world of long-lost games.
  • Press Start 6: The Wailing Reach. The doorway the Game Master tried to keep shut.

And two final doorways waiting at the end for the readers who make it that far.

Still a story-based assessment underneath

Like every book in The Assessment Library, each Press Start adventure is a story-based DISC assessment. Your child is not answering questions about themselves. They are making choices inside the story, and those choices quietly reveal how they are wired. By the time they clear a doorway, their personality profile has grown a little richer, shown in kid-friendly language they actually enjoy.

Built for the reluctant reader

We built Press Start on the same idea behind everything we make: kids do not need to be told to read, they need a reason to want to. If you have a child who would rather do anything than open a book, a series that unlocks like a video game might be exactly the reason they have been missing. For more on that idea, see our post on how to get kids to want to read, or explore the whole kids experience.
