The story-based DISC assessment was created by Shawn Taylor, a software engineer inside the assessment industry, in March 2025. The idea arrived on a drive home after a day of marketing meetings about the industry's oldest problem: nobody takes a personality test twice. By 3:14 the next morning the first story-based DISC assessment existed as working code, a pick-your-path story named for his daughter. He founded The Assessment Library, the first company built on the method, and it launched publicly in July 2026.
The first person ever to read one was his nine-year-old son, who promptly tried to click through it without reading, and in doing so inspired the timing-based anti-gaming detection now built into every book in the library.
